4General SectionIntroductionIntroductionGeneral SectionThis display is intended to allow the vehicle operator to monitor vital truck andengine information while the vehicle is in use. It also has the capability todisplay stored trip information. Whenever possible, the desired displayselection should be made prior to operating the vehicle.About This ManualThe Cat ID has been designed for use on 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15,and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. Even thoughthere are two different types of engines, Cat ID supports them similarly withthis one manual describing all of the features of the Cat ID. When this manualdescribes a feature, you should assume that the feature applies to both typesof engines. If a feature only applies to one type, the manual will state3100 HEUI Engines Only or 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16Engines Only.NOTE: The Cat ID will only support 3100 HEUI Engines (3116 and 3126) thatare September 1996 model year or newer.Select the desired display prior to moving the vehicle. Do notmanipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divertattention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipmentdamage.

5General SectionFeatures of Cat IDEESNCaterpillar Driver Information Display (Cat ID)Features of Cat IDThe Cat ID can display a variety of engine and vehicle information, asdescribed in this section. For detailed operating information see the OperationSection of this manual. It is recommended the driver review the availableinformation as listed in this manual or the Cat ID Screen Map and select, before driving, the most important information for the trip. This will avoidunnecessary distractions while driving in traffic.Engine Operating InformationThe Cat ID provides information on cruise control set speed, PTO engine rpmset speed, fuel temperature to the engine, boost and oil pressure, coolanttemperature, and intake manifold temperature.Vehicle Trip InformationThe Cat ID provides information on fuel economy, fuel used, average vehiclespeed, idle and PTO time, percent idle time, idle fuel, and PTO fuel. All of thethese parameters can be tied to trip segments or the engine history. A DriverTrip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E, C-15, and C-16Engines only. A Fleet Trip Segment is available for 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E,C-15, and C-16 Engines and 3100 HEUI (3116 and 3126) Engines. For theDriver Trip Segment, the driver determines the start and stop points, and forthe Fleet Trip Segment the vehicle owner determines the start and stop points. The Fleet Trip Segment can be tied to each state the vehicle operates in, aswell as split between two Driver ID’s.

6General SectionFeatures of Cat IDMaintenance InformationThe last oil and filter change can be entered, allowing the display to indicatewhen the next oil and filter change is due.Diagnostic DataThe Cat ID provides diagnostic codes, with both a number, and a brief textexplanation. Those codes, indicating a potentially serious engine problem, aredisplayed automatically by Cat ID. When one of these codes appears, thedriver should bring the vehicle to a stop (off the road and out of traffic),because the engine may shutdown within 20 seconds. Refer to AutomaticallyDisplayed Diagnostic Codes in the Operation Section, Display ScreenDiagnostic Data for a list of these codes.Theft DeterrentThe Cat ID provides the capability to allow or prevent engine starting, or shutthe engine down by entering a four character password into the display whenthe engine is at idle.Fuel Correction AdjustmentThe Cat ID provides the capability to adjust the Fuel Correction Factor of theECM.Display ConfigurationThe display can provide information in either English/Spanish orEnglish/French. Units of measure can be displayed in English (mph, U.S.gallons, psi, F), English-Imperial Gallons (mph, Imperial gallons, psi, F), orMetric (kph, liters, kPa, C). The English/French EEPROM as well as theFrench or Spanish manuals can be ordered by contacting your localCaterpillar Dealer.

This is useful in a slip-seat drivingapplication.State CrossingThe Cat ID allows the user to enter what state they are currently driving in.This allows the ECM to log separate driving records for each state.Access to ParametersAccess to the available parameters requires an electronic engine to beconnected to the SAE J1587 ATA Data Link. The availability of parametersdepends upon the engine manufacturer, model year of engine, and ECMCustomer Programmable Parameter settings.
