Scene III . .Leonard BernsteinFrom Trouble in Tahiti(1918-1990In this one-act opera, a candid portrait of a troubled youngsuburban couple is portrayed. This opera focuses on Sam andDinah’s marital discord, while also highlighting the profoundlonging for love and intimacy between them. In Scene III, Dinahtells her psychiatrist about a dream she had.!I was standing in a garden, a garden gone to seed, choked withevery kind of weed. There were twisted trees around me, all blackagainst the sky; black and bare and dead and dry. My father called,“Come out of this place.” I wanted to go, but here was no way. Nosign, no path, to show me the way! Then another voice was calling,it barely could be heard. I remember every word.“There is a garden - come with me, come with me. A shininggarden - come and see, come and see. There love will teachus harmony and grace, harmony and grace. Then love willlead us to a quiet place.”Then I ran to find the singer; I longed to see his face. He couldfree me from this place. Every step I took was terror; the groundbeneath me burned; stones were everywhere I turned. And worstof all there was the noise, angry shouts, and furious cries! And theroar like the roar of millions of flies! Through it all his voice wascalling, but now it seemed quite near. Soft and warm and strongand clear.“There is a garden – come with me, come with me.”!
No One Is Alone . .Stephen SondheimFrom Into the Woods(b. 1930)“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Sondheim’smusical, Into the Woods. The story follows a Baker and his wife, Cinderella, ayoung boy named Jack, Little Red, a Witch, and Rapunzel who all have their ownwish agenda. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and appear tolive happily ever after. But in Act II, we see the consequences of their actionshaunt them in disastrous ways. The community must join together to save eachother. When characters see the consequences of their actions in Act II, Cinderellaand the Baker realize that actions they take against someone else will affect notonly them, but multiples of people. No One Is Alone is sung as a reminder of theduty they all have to act in good faith with others.“Someone is on your side, no one is alone.”
