The currentmonth’s estimates arepreliminary, while previous month’s data issubject to revision.Estimates of nonfarmpayroll jobs show thenumber of jobs byindustry and reflectemployment by placeof work. Hours andearnings estimates arebased on payroll andworker-hour data collected for productionworkers in manufacturing industries.Industries are classified according to theNorth American Industry ClassificationSystem (NAICS). Allestimates are basedon a first quarter 2020benchmark.Explanation of Termsand ConceptsMonthly BusinessSurvey of EmployersA monthly sample survey designed to provide industry information on nonfarmpayroll jobs. Data arecompiled each monthfrom mail surveys andtelephone interviewsconducted by the Bureau of Labor Statisticsin cooperation withDepartment of Workforce Services. The dataare based on establishment records and include all workers, fullor part-time, who received pay during thepayroll period whichincludes the 12th of themonth. Approximately5,000 Arkansas business establishmentsare surveyed.MetropolitanStatistical AreasA term applied by theU.S. Office of Management and Budget tocounties that have oneor more central citiesand that meet specifiedcriteria of populationdensity, commutingpatterns and social andeconomic integration.Current PopulationSurvey (CPS)A monthly sample survey of the population16 years of age andover, designed to provide data on the laborforce, the employedand the unemployed.The survey is conducted each month by theBureau of the Censusfor BLS. These are known as Alternative Measures of LaborUnderutilization and are referred to as U1-U6, with U-3 as the official unemployment rate. These measures arecalculated using data from the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly survey conducted by the U.S. CensusBureau. Approximately 1,000 Arkansas households are in the survey each month.Alternative Measures of Labor UnderutilizationState of Arkansas2nd Q 2021 - 1st Q 2022 %Alternative Measures of Labor Underutilization areavailable at the statewide level and are producedquarterly. Estimates are calculated using a four quarter moving average. ntArkaArkansanss aseCurrMayLaborLabor MarketMRarketeportReportSt a te of A rka n sa sCivilian Labor Force Summar yLabor force data, produced by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics and released bythe Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, show Arkansas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rateremained unchanged at 3.2 percent between April and May. Arkansas’ civilian labor force rose by 2,545,a result of 2,367 more employed and 178 additional unemployed Arkansans. ArkansasentCurrMayLaborLabor MarketMRarketeportReportSt a te of A rka n sa sNonfarm Payroll Job Summar yA pril 2022 - May 2022Arkansas’ nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 1,300 in May to total 1,315,800, setting a record high number of jobs for a second consecutive month. Gains were posted in six major industry sectors. Jobs inleisure and hospitality rose by 1,500, mostly in accommodation and food services ( 1,300). Financialactivities added 1,100 jobs. Hiring occurred in both finance and insurance ( 700) and real estate, rental,and leasing ( 400). Jobs in professional and business services increased by 1,100. Expansions wereposted in administrative and support services ( 1,300) and management of companies ( 600). Educational and health services declined by 2,000. Losses were reported across all subsectors. Jobs in trade,transportation, and utilities decreased by 1,200. Most of the contraction was in retail trade (-1,600).M a y 2021 - May 2022Compared to May 2021, nonfarm payroll jobs in Arkansas are up 33,200. Seven major industry sectorsposted growth, as five sectors increased by 2,600 or more jobs each. Trade, transportation, and utilities added 12,500 jobs, all in transportation, warehousing, and utilities ( 7,800) and wholesale trade( 5,000). Jobs in manufacturing rose by 7,500, with expansions in both nondurable goods ( 4,600)and durable goods ( 2,900) manufacturing. Leisure and hospitality added 7,200 jobs, due to hiring inall subsectors. Employment in professional and business services increased by 3,600. Growth in management of companies ( 5,000) was offset by declines in administrative and support services (-1,800).Government added 2,600 jobs, mostly in local government-educational services ( 2,200). Jobs in construction declined by 2,000. Rates wereunchanged in 21 counties, while seventeen county posted rate declines. Jobless rates rangedfrom a low of 2.2 percent in Benton and Washington counties to a high of 7.4 percent in ChicotCounty.In May, fifty-six counties reported unemployment rates at or below four percent. That is downslightly from 57 counties at or below four percent in April. For the second consecutive month,only one county-- Chicot County-- had an unemployment rate at or above seven percent.Compared to May 2021, unemployment rates are down in all 75 Arkansas counties.
