Kettering UniversityUNDERGRADUATE CATALOGKettering University allows students to major in experiencethrough its unique and innovative co-operative education s/co-op) model. Students atKettering split their time between three-month academic and co-op terms. This allows students to almost immediately apply what they learn in theclassroom at their co-op employment position. All aspects of learning are investigated and integrated to create anongoing and all-encompassing educational journey. Each semester, whether engaged within a classroom (guided by professors, advisers, andfellow students) or in an employer setting (aided by co-op managers andemployer mentors), students follow a cyclic process to gain the valuableexperience needed to graduate and earn employment in their desiredfield. The Kettering track record speaks for itself, with alumni who becamefounders, CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, and vice presidents of companies such as:Merrill Lynch, General Motors, Walmart, Gap, FedEx, Indy Motor Speedway,Detroit Labs, Hurley Medical Center, Biomet Inc., Gibson Guitars and TheWeather Company, just to name a few. These alumni came to Kettering at different times and pursued differentdegrees, but one thing they have in common is that they were preparedto be leaders. Charles Kettering believed that both theoretical knowledgeand practical experience are necessary elements of an education. This belief made him an advocate for cooperative education in theearliest years of the twentieth century. Our founders were among thoseinfluenced by Kettering‘s advocacy. From our earliest years our studentshave benefited from moving back and forth between the practicalrequirements of work experience and the disciplined reflection fostered inan academic environment. We trace our origins to 1919 as the School of Automotive Trades, aschool that provided night classes for factory workers in the growingautomotive industry in Flint, Michigan. Under the leadership of AlbertSobey, the school became the Flint Institute of Technology in 1923. In1924 Sobey created the school‘s first cooperative education program(p. 71) permitting alternating periods of full-time academic work andfull-time work in local factories in a four-year program.Recognizing the potential of
