After he met his wife, Shannon, the couple decided to move back to the area.He worked in construction for a number ofyears after moving back, which often includedsnow plowing jobs. One big challenge withplowing snow was getting parts for the plows.Eiden said he would have to go to the metroarea to find parts and often times had to wait forhours. When construction slowed in 2011 and 2012,he began selling plows and parts through hisdad Kevin’s shop, ProAuto Transmission in Norwood Young America; they started selling SnowDogg and Western plows and parts. They now have clients from the metro who likeITurn to pg. 2Scott Eiden of Rec-Tech Outdoor SolutionsWe are yourOne-Stop Shop!LandscapeSuppliesLandscaping& Installation Pulverized Black Dirt,Sand & Gravel Retaining Wall Block & Pavers Stepping Stones Concrete & Plastic Edging Large Variety ofDecorative Rock Mulch – 5 Varieties & Colors Grass Seed, WildflowerMix, FertilizerGarden Center Annuals, Perennials& Shrubs Seed Potatoes Onion Sets SEEDS Trees – Balled & Burlapor Potted Fountains & Statues Glazed Garden Pottery Birdbaths & Birdhouses Garden Decor Boulder & Retaining Walls Silt Fencing, Erosion Control Paver Patios, Sidewalks,Driveways Seeding, Sod & Hydroseeding Ponds & Waterfalls Rip Rapping & Irrigation Custom Landscape Curbing Landscape LightingLawn CareCompletengiseDepacsLandnoitallatsnI& Core Aerating Innerseeding Thatching Lawn Mowing, WeedControl Spring and Fall Clean Up Lawn Fertilizing –Step ProgramsTree Service24 HourExcavating Backhoe Work,Concrete Removal Post Hole Digging, Trenching Parking Lot Sweeping Tree & Stump Removal Tree & Shrub Trimming Storm Clean Up Miscellaneous BoomTruck WorkNeubarth Lawn Care & LandscapingDeliveryAvailableFree EstimatesResidential &Commercial10627 Hwy. 22, Glencoe320-864-3296 or 320-260-1626OPEN: Monday-Friday 5 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday 5 a.m.-8 p.m.

It has soldbarges in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan andIowa.Eiden’s goal was to build and sell one barge ayear, but Rec-Tech has been building aroundthree a year and is currently working on its seventh.Besides building and selling barges and thedock and boat lift installation and removal services, Rec-Tech also sells Pier Pleasure and Hewitt docks and boat lifts.Eiden says he likes anything to do with theoutdoors and has created the perfect job andcompany for himself.Eiden’s wife Shannon, who has an in-homeday care, and their two daughters Abby, 7, andEmma, 5, help out around the shop too.Rec-Tech Outdoor Solutions is located at 200Fourth Ave. SE in Plato (behind the gas station).Beautiful Gardens Start Here! Home & GardenSupplement to the Glencoe AdvertiserSunday, April 29, 2018, page 3Shade-tolerant plants help to complete landscapesPlants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others.People who find their landscapes areless supportive to sun-loving plants can choosefrom a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubsand trees.Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability towithstand low levels of light. Certain plants haveadapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plantsthat grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside ofthe tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a widevariety of foliage to grow even though they arenot exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broadleaves and expend significant energy to capturesunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerantplants expend less energy and tend to be moreefficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants intothe landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shadeor sun the plants will receive. Heavy shade: Heavy shade is when no directsunlight reaches a plant. This occurs at the baseof northern-facing walls or beneath thick treecanopies. Full sun: Areas that receive full sun enjoy direct sunlight between six and eight hours perday. Moderate shade: These sites have reflectedsunlight that may come off of water features. Light shade: Plants in these areas will getpartially filtered or dappled sunlight.Once homeowners understand which type ofshade they are dealing with, they can then visitplant nurseries and select their plants. Mostgreenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount ofshade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. Iffurther assistance is needed, a knowledgeableemployee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Those who are looking for some preliminaryguidance when it comes to selecting shade-tolerant shrubs, plants or trees can consult the following list. Coleus: The coleus, Solenostemon scutellarioides, is another perennial that can have a variety of different leaf colors and striations. Witch hazels: These are a genus in the familyHamamelidacea, which has four differentspecies in North America. This shrub or smalltree features arching branches with dense,multi-stemmed clumps. Witch hazel producesflowers in the late autumn when most otherplants are sparse. Bayberry: Myrica pensylvanica can grow inpartial shade as a hedge or natural property divider.
