A pioneer and key partner in Singapore’snation building efforts, our products are usedin most construction projects island-wide,from the iconic Changi International Airportto the public housing that is the trademark ofSingapore’s landscape.Singapore is home to NatSteel’s headquarters,as well as its flagship plant, which boastsone of the largest single downstream rebarfabrication operations in the world. TheSingapore plant is the only local steel millwith an integrated upstream and downstreamoperation, where steel is manufacturedthrough recycling scrap, and fabricatedaccording to customers’ needs. Withoperations spanning across the region, thegroup has an annual steel production capacityof over 2 million tonnes.NatSteel today continues to build on itssuccess as a leading steel producer in AsiaPacific, with over 3,000 employees across theregion. Tata Steel is among the top global steelcompanies with an annual crude steel capacityof over 28 million tonnes with major footprints in India, the UK, Netherlands, Thailand,China and Australia. As part of the Tata Steelgroup, NatSteel is poised for further growth, with its sights set on becoming the global steelindustry benchmark for value creation andcorporate citizenship.1

STEELMAKINGThe only steel mill in Singapore, NatSteel has one of themost energy-efficient steel making operations in the world.Typical steel mills operate electric arc furnaces using morethan 400 kilowatt hours of energy to produce a tonne ofsteel. NatSteel does the same with 30% less energy.Melting ProcessProcessed metal waste is melted in the electricarc furnace with fuel oil burners and highvoltage current, enriched by oxygen jetting.Chemistry Refinement andTemperature ControlMolten steel is transferred to the 80-tonneLadle Furnace for chemistry refinement andtemperature control.Continuous CastingRefined molten steel flows through a 4-strandhigh speed caster. Billets are casted andare directly hot charged to the rolling mill, resulting in fuel oil savings.23

STEELROLLINGAt the Merchant Bar Mill, billets are heated in a reheatingfurnace and rolled through a sequence of rolling standswhich progressively reduce the billets to the final sizes ofreinforcement bars through an automated process. NatSteelis capable of using Micro Alloy or Tempcore heat treatmentprocess to produce high strength reinforcing bars which arehighly malleable and weldable.Reheat FurnaceFrom the meltshop, an automated conveyorsystem transfers billets into the reheat furnacefor rolling process, reducing the heat lossrequired for reheating and rolling.Rolling StandsA sequence of fully automated and watercooled roll stands that gradually reduce billetsto required sizes.Finished ProductsBillets are rolled into reinforcement bars.Small diameters rods are also produced at fastdesign speeds with precise tolerance controlusing a six-pass bar block.45
