Behzad earned hisPh.D. in Transportation Engineering from the University of Illinoisat Chicago in 2015. His research interests are travel behavior mod-Bong Jin-Choieling, travel demand modeling, traffic safety, discrete choice analy-Jonathan Summerlinsis, and econometric modeling. Joel Volinski waselected to serve as President of the Council in 2015-16 after having served in the other officer positions over the past threeyears. CUTC is an organization that represents the interests of over 90 universities with transportation centers and worksto improve transportation research and education at member institutions, facilitate communications among members,recognize excellence among members, and promote interest in transportation among grade school and high school students to encourage them to consider transportation as a career. As President, he will drive the agenda for improving thevalue of CUTC to member institutions. In addition, Joel was reconfirmed to serve as Chair of the Research, Education,and Training Reauthorization Coalition (RETRC), a non-profit organization representing 22 universities that work together to promote continued federal funding for university transportation research. Over 70 members of Congress signed aletter drafted by RETRC that assures their support for continued federal support in any reauthorization of federal surfacetransportation legislation.Joel Volinski traveled to Portland, Oregon to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Institute forTransportation and Communities (NITC), one of the five “National” University Transportation Centers selected by theUSDOT. NITC members include Portland State University, the University of Oregon, Oregon Institute of Technology, University of Utah, and the University of South Florida. Two projects submitted by USF PIs Kristine Williams and Vicky Perkwere approved for funding for projects which address NITC’s theme of Livability. In addition, USF will receive support forthe development of curriculum for a course to be taught by Kristine Williams as part of the Urban and Regional Planningdepartment program. Funds to support students and guest speakers will also be made available to USF over the next year.

BACKPACKS FOR HEALTHY FAMILIES PASCOFor the past 16 Years, CUTR has participated in the “Backpacks for Healthy Families Pasco” by providing backpacks andschool supplies to children who are struggling financially. This year we have the opportunity to help 20 children have agreat start to a new school year. Healthy Families Pasco has provided a list of children who are in need.
