Every two years the descendents of Abraham and MaryVandal gather to celebrate their Vandal heritage and tostrengthen the bond that holds us all together as onebig loving family. This group picture was taken at ourreunion in Lucas, Iowa in 2003.

THE VANDAL REUNION AT HAWK'SNEST IN 2013

InHolland Wandel ispronounced the same aswe would pronounceVandal in America. Whenserving in theRevolutionary War theArmy spelled it severaldifferent ways but settledon the spelling “Vandal”for his pension check.ABRAHAM VANDAL WASBORNABRAHAM WANDEL

RevolutionaryWar VeteranAnsted, W.V. Gravesite OurAbraham was born in Dutchess, New York near Albany andserved as a Private in the Revolutionary War, serving with theState Troops of New York Militia from 1776 until 1781 and at onetime was under the command of General George Washingtonaccording to Department of the Interior documents.

These are pictures of how the men in the New YorkMilitia dressed and are perhaps how Abraham wasuniformed.

InReformed ProtestantDutch Church - AlbanyAlbany, Abraham can betraced back to his Great, Great,Great Grandfather, Evert JanseWendel, who was with the DutchWest Indies Company in Emden,Holland (now Germany) andimmigrated to New Amsterdam(New York City) in 1642. In 1646he moved to Fort Orange (nowAlbany) and is recorded as beinga Controlling Elder of theReformed Protestant DutchChurch and a City Aldermanthere.

Evert JanseWendel’s father, JanWendell, was a shipCaptain out of thePort of Emden,Netherlands. Hewas born in 1621 inLeiden, SouthHolland Province andis the furthest backwe have been ableto trace the familyup to this point.Leiden, Zuid (South)Holland, home of JanWendell.

Emden, Holland was a very busy port cityin the 1600s and still is today.

This is a statue ofCaptain PhilSchuyler in Albanyand is perhapshow Captain JanWendell appearedin those days.

AbrahamVandal was born in 1758 inDutchess, New York near Albany andwas the Great, Great, Great Grandsonof Captain Jan WendelHe and Mary Dillon were married inRockbridge County, Virginia in1780 and settled in Fayetteville,WV.

Abraham and Mary donated aportion of their land for thebuilding of the Fayetteville,West Virginia Courthouse

Over the years the descendantsof Abraham and Mary havechanged the spelling of theirname in several different ways.For instance, the children of JohnDillon Vandal chose severaldifferent spellings Some changed it to VandelSome changed it to VandallWhile others left it as Vandal

Andrew Vandal, son of JamesAnAbraham, was the only one of theten children to change the spellingto VandaleOf the six children of ThomasJames Vandal, four changed thespelling to Vandel and twochanged it to VandellThe children of Curtis Vandelseparated the Van from the Delto make the name Van Del.

Regardless of how we spell our name, we areall Abraham and Mary’s off spring.
