NEWSBenzene in water ‘notcaused by HDPE pipes’Extrudermaker addscapacityPolyethylene pipe did notcause benzene contamination in the water supply ofCalifornia towns affected byforest fires in 2018, says areport from the Plastic PipesInstitute (PPI).Instead, the contamination was due to debrisbeing “sucked into thepipes, contaminating thewater system regardless ofthe pipe material”, said theorganisation.Fire-damaged areas, including towns such asParadise, reported highlevels of benzene contamination in the water supply inthe aftermath of the fire. There had been claims thatmelting HDPE had led to theproduction of benzene, aknown carcinogen.“We wanted to ascertainthat HDPE or any grade ofpolyethylene pipe was notthe cause of the benzenebeing found in this specificarea,” said David Fink, president of PPI. “Our staffhave conducted on-siteUS Extruders says it hascompleted an expansionthat nearly doubles itsmanufacturing space. The company, whichmanufactures customsingle-screw extruders, extrusion systems andscrews, says it has grownby more than 25% over thelast year. The expansionincludes the installation ofoverhead cranes, whichmakes extruder assemblyeasier and more efficient, itsays.“We see our growthdirectly tied to our commitment to providing the bestextruder technology andequipment backed byunmatched customersupport,” said Bill Kramer, president of US Extruders.ProSystems, whichsupplies US Extruders withfull extruder controls, shares the same facility. Ithas also expanded itsproduction space – byaround 40%. www.us-extruders.comAbove: Forest fires destroyed many homes in California in 2018visits with Paradise IrrigationDistrict officials. There hasbeen no evidence foundthat plastic pipes of anymaterial are responsible forthe production of benzeneor any other contaminantdue to the heating of pipesduring the fire.”PPI said that, before thefire, the district had 170miles of underground watermains – typically buried36-48in deep – made frommaterials including steel, cast iron, asbestos cementand PVC. Water serviceconnections used mainlysteel, polybutylene (PB),copper, PVC and HDPE.Newer materials such asPEX and C-PVC were rarelyfound in older structures.Contamination, includingbenzene, was found in alltypes of water main pipe –even those buried deep, and not exposed to the heatof the fire.“There are many ways thatdifferent chemicals can findtheir way into the environment, especially in a firewhere flame temperaturescan hit 1,500F,” said Fink. The full report isavailable from PPI’s website. www.plasticpipe.orgOyak brand merger creates 500m PVC stabiliser giantOyak of Turkey says it has become the world’s largest supplier of PVC stabilisers, with the merger of its Akdeniz Kimya and Chemson brands.Together, the two brands account for US 500 million of sales. Most likely, shipments of machinery will alsoincrease in the final quarter of 2020.”The value of single- and twin-screwextruders grew by more than 27% and17%, respectively, in the third quarter.Injection moulding equipment was up15% from the previous quarter and bySales of primary plastics machinery in North AmericaSource: Plastics Industry Association, CESalmost 8% compared to the thirdquarter in 2019.In its quarterly survey of plasticsmachinery suppliers, CES found thatthree-quarters of respondents (76%)expect market conditions to improve orhold steady compared to one year ago. This is higher than the 36% who felt thisway in the second quarter. For the next12 months, almost 90% expect themarket to be steady-to-better – farabove the 48% who said this previously.“The pace of economic recovery isnot without risks, and its path willdepend on the containment of thecoronavirus,” said Pineda. “Nevertheless, the overall outlook for plasticsmachinery and the industry has turnedmore favourable in recent months.” www.plasticsindustry.orgTeel expands pipe extrusion operationsUS-based Teel Plastics is toexpand its pipe extrusionoperations, by leasing anextra 180,000 sq ft ofmanufacturing and storagespace. The site will be Teel’sfourth in its home city ofBaraboo, Wisconsin.
