Sorbothane Standard Products GuideSorbothane is a proprietary, visco-elastic polymer. Visco-elastic means that a material exhibits properties of both liquids (viscous solutions) and solids (elastic materials). Sorbothane combines shock absorption, good memory, vibration isolation and vibration damping characteristics. In addition, Sorbothane is a very effective acoustic damper and absorber. While many materials exhibit one of these characteristics,Sorbothane combines all of them in a stable material with a long fatigue life. » Sorbothanehas a low creep rate compared to other polymers(rubber, neoprene, silicone, etc.) » Sorbothanehas a superior damping coefficient, over a very widetemperature range, compared to any other polymer. » Unlike fluid-based shock absorbers or foam products, Sorbothane absorbs shock efficiently for millions of cycles.» Sorbothaneeliminates the need for metal springs to return the system to itsequilibrium position after absorbing a shock. SHOCK ABSORBERSCUSTOM SOLUTIONSIf an appropriate isolator cannot be found among thestandard products, Sorbothane also manufactures ahost of custom isolators. Additionally, you may makeisolators yourself using standard sheet stock. See thestock sheet section or contact the factory for furtherinformation at support@sorbothane.com.ELECTRONICSThis catalog shows “industrial-sized” isolators for loadsin pounds, hundreds of pounds and thousands ofpounds. Sorbothane is widely used to isolate delicateelectronics – printed-circuit boards, LCD’s, disk drivesand other small devices. Space is always tight in theseapplications. In vibration, the wrong design can make mattersworse than before. In shock absorption, even a littlecan improve performance. Consult the factory on yourshock applications.ACOUSTICSThe Sorbothane hemispheres are world-famous mountsfor audio equipment. In addition, where space is tight, thin sheets of Sorbothane, with or without PressureSensitive Adhesive (PSA) can convert a noisy designinto a very quiet success.GASKETSSorbothane is a popular material for gaskets becauseof its chemical resistance, its ability to conform toirregular surfaces, its low creep and its reusability. Its natural tackiness makes it easy to install. Gasketscan be made by you from sheet stock or produced atour factory.sorbothane.comSORBOTHANE STANDARD PRODUCTS GUIDE Revised 04/2020 2020 Sorbothane, Inc.3

STEPS FOR SELECTING A SORBOTHANE ISOLATOR CONTROLLING SHOCK1. Determine the load (weight) of the unit that requiresisolation. Divide the weight of the system by the numberof isolators to be used. This is the load per isolator. Matchthe load per isolator to a load rating of a part. Evenlyapplied across entire pad.2. Determine the lowest critical frequency (excitationfrequency) of the system. For example: RPM of the motor, rate at which a cylinder strokes, output speed of a speedreducer. Divide minute-based information, such as RPM,by 60 to convert to Hertz (cycles per second).3. Select an appropriate isolator by using the informationcharts supplied with each product. Generally, anappropriate isolator will create a system natural frequencyat least one-third lower than the excitation frequency. For instance, if the source of the vibration is an 1800RPM motor, then the excitation frequency is1800/60 30 Hertz. The natural frequency of theisolator should be 20 Hertz or less.4. Select the isolator that meets the technical and physicalrequirements of your system. In addition to a part number, you must also specify the durometer of the Sorbothanepart required to get the specified load rating. Do notoversize isolators. Oversized isolators raise the naturalfrequency and reduce the effectiveness. Sorbothane’sstandard color is black. Other colors are available forspecial orders.CONTROLLING VIBRATIONIMPACT ABSORPTION5. Remember: A bad design can actually make things worsefor vibration damping. Consult the factory if you arehaving problems.6. Remember: Sorbothane works best in compression. Ifyou have a tension application, bushings or a customvariation of the bushings are your best options.4»Please call 800.838.3906 or email sales@sorbothane.com for pricing and availability. DurometerDurometer is a measurement of relative hardness and is used tocompare polymers.Sorbothane is softer than rubber and most other polymers.Sorbothane is measured on the Shore “00” scale. Most types of rubber and other polymers are specified using theShore “A” or Shore “D” scales. In comparing stiffness, be aware ofthe scale being used for the material in question. The hardness comparison values listed are approximate and shouldonly be used as a guide.Shape FactorsShape Factor is a term of art used in the design of elastomer products. It has the virtue of being an easily developed mathematical expression. It quantifies the unique ability of elastomers to react to an applied forceby bulging at 90 degrees to the direction of application of the force.A “high” shape factor indicates a minimal ability to deform. A “low”shape factor indicates a high ability to deform. Implicit in a low shapefactor is a low spring rate and the capability to have a low naturalfrequency. The Shape Factor is calculated by developing the ratio of the averagecontact surface (one side) divided by the perimeter area. As such, itcan be developed for any shape that can be mathematically described. However, a few standard shapes cover over 90% of all needs.Product properties developed using the Shape Factor methodologyhave a nominal accuracy of /-15%. More precise product propertiesrequire physical testing or Finite Element Analysis (FEA).Shore HardnessScale Comparison ChartOSorbothane R-RESISTANTCalculating Deflection / Natural Frequency / Spring RateSorbothane, Inc. offers a printable Engineering Design Guide PDFavailable at sorbothane.com. The guide is available to assist engineerswith a practical, hands-on approach to designing with Sorbothane .In addition to the printable guide, three interactive EngineeringDesign “Calculators” can be found on the Sorbothane website e.aspx. Sorbothane Bushings & WashersSorbothane Bushings are designed to isolate vibration and absorb shock. Using two bushings togetheror a bushing and washer(s), you can create a floating bolt that isolates the unit from any metal-to-metalcontact. Different durometers allow for different spring rates. Load ratings assume a 10%-20% deflection ofthe material. This deflection is achieved by a combination of system weight and torquing of the connecting bolts.Do not over torque the bolts as this defeats the intended vibration isolation and shortens bushing life. Use a high-quality(thread deforming) lock nut. Bushings may be used in tension connections.BUSHINGSWASHERS6»DIMENSIONSPART NUMBERA 4 - 110576170-70-100.720.500.150.280.22708 - 210510005-30-101.000.460.190.280.31307 - 180510005-50-101.000.460.190.280.315015 - 250510005-70-101.000.460.190.280.317020 - 420510002-30-101.000.450.190.250.603013 - 220510002-50-101.000.450.190.250.605022 - 330510002-70-101.000.450.190.250.607028 - 44CDEDURORATEDLOAD(lbs)DIMENSIONSPART NUMBERA (DIA)0510020-30-100.500.130.13300.40- 00.130.13704 - .190.45503.5 - 80510001-70-101.000.190.457015 - .380.50504.5 - 90510045-70-101.250.380.507020 - .500.50506 - 140510050-70-101.500.500.507030 - 65BPlease call 800.838.3906 or email sales@sorbothane.com for pricing and availability.
