Common LED mythsThere are many benefits to using LED lighting, but there are also numerousmisconceptions about it. We help to separate the facts from fiction by busting some ofthe common myths.Myth 1Myth 4LEDs last foreverLED light quality is poorLEDs have a long source life but they do still slowly fade overtime. Ambient temperatures, electrical drive currents, and theeffectiveness of cooling systems are all factors that contribute tothis phenomenon called lumen depreciation. While LEDs typicallydo not catastrophically fail, lumen depreciation is a critical factor indetermining useful lifetimes.Philips designs our white light LED products to sustain70% of initial lumen output (L70)The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is the prevalent method usedto judge light quality, though there are known deficiencies andlimitations associated with it, especially for LED-based light sources.Research in at least one study found participants preferring LEDsources over halogen and incandescent because of overall colourappearance, not a CRI value. The International Commission onIllumination (CIE) has proposed a new metric called Colour QualityScale (CQS), which will incorporate colour rendering, chromaticdiscrimination and observer preferences into the measure ofColour Quality.Philips works to design high quality and consistent lightoutput. We measure our colour consistency in SDCM(Standard Deviation of Colour Matching).Myth 2White LEDs produce over 180 lumensper wattThese results are often obtained in labs where LED chips aretested at room temperature conditions with short “pulse” tests thatproduce a high lumen output. While the results are not necessarily“wrong,” they do not reflect the typical expected output of LEDsin practical use. When used in lighting fixtures, LED output oftendecrease by 30-40%.Philips does not use raw LED specifications or “instanton” output testing. Instead, we use independent testinglabs to validate the output of our fixtures at constant, realistic thermally-stable operating temperatures inrated, ambient environments.Myth 33 Watt LEDs are brighter than 1 Watt LEDsThe wattage of a LED is not directly comparable to the wattageof a traditional light source or even from one LED to another. Twodifferent LEDs can consume the same power but differ noticeablyin light output. Thus, when selecting LEDs or LED fixtures, it is moreabout a quality and consistent light output rather than absolutepower.Philips develops solutions based on the light output, distribution and quality needed for the application andnot based on the particular wattage of LEDs.4Myth 5LEDs generate no heatWhen used in lighting applications, LEDs do not radiate infraredheat, only visible light. However, waste heat is produced during theconversion of electricity into light. If not properly removed fromthe lighting system, this may potentially damage the LEDs. Heatremoval can be accomplished through heat sinks that draws heataway from the LED and dissipate it into the surrounding air.Philips designs, simulates and tests our products for highthermal efficiency to ensure optimal performance andmaximise the lifetime of our LEDs.Myth 6LEDs are not resistant to vibrationThere are no moving parts, filaments or fragile glass enclosureswith LED lighting. LEDs are therefore very suitable for use in a widerange of applications.Philips designs products that must pass vibration testsaccording to IEC standards. In some cases, we usemilitary standards for higher grade of assurance.

Myth 7Philips products have been used in more than 20,000installations worldwide, including large exteriorprojects such as the Stamford Bridge Stadium (ChelseaFootball Club), Al Saad Stadium (Doha, Qatar) andFederal Highway (Malaysia).LED systems cost too muchThe initial investment of LED systems is higher than that ofconventional systems, but due to the long life of the LEDand energy savings ranging between 50%-70% compared toconventional light sources, the economic payback can typicallybe seen in less than two years. Additionally, the upfront cost ofLED systems is also dropping rapidly.Philips provides cost-effective solutions that have aproven and compelling return on investment (ROI).Myth 8LEDs are not bright enoughLED traffic lights are already common and are certainly asign that LEDs are bright enough to be seen even in daylight.Outdoor roads, tunnels and entire building façades are being litentirely with LEDs today. By any measure, LEDs have enoughlight output for use even in very large outdoor daylight-visibleinstallations.Myth 9LED lights are dangerous to our eyesThere is a small amount of blue light generated by LED but it isa tiny fraction of the emissions from natural daylight, and similarto emissions from other artificial light sources like incandescent, halogen and energy savers or fluorescent lamps. Typical dailyexposure to natural blue light is at least 1,000 times strongercompared to artificial light indoorsPhilips LED products comply with all the relevantregulations and legislation, ensuring products aresafe to use. This means that being exposed to a LEDlight is as safe as being exposed to any other artificiallight source, and safer than being exposed to naturallighting conditions – such as walking in the open air.Take the next stepSee how Philips LED trade products range canflexibly address your business needs.Contact your local Philips sales Representative for moreinformation or call 1300 304 4045

Why Philips downlights?A downlight provides generaland even lighting with a widebeam angle. It can play aprimary or secondary role inyour lighting design, and issuitable for places such asliving room, bedroom, studyroom, corridor and kitchen.Even and comfortable lightBrighter illuminationPhilips LED provides greater energy efficiencywhen compared to similar LED lights withthe same wattage and colour temperature, ensuring you brighter illumination for the sameconsumption.21Wide beam angleMore coverage, better illuminationAnti-glare diffuserGives a soft, even glowBeam angle 100o6Lumen determines the overall brightness of thebulb. Therefore, the bigger the lumen value thebrighter the light.

Up to 25,000 hours long lifeQuality light for natural coloursReliable qualityNatural coloursThough LEDs generally have a long lifespan, theyare sensitive to heat, and may reduce in lifespan ifBetter quality lights are able to reproduce coloursnaturally. The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) isoverheated. Philips lights are designed to counterthe heat generated from the driver, as well as theheat emitted from the light source.a gauge that ranges from 1 - 100, and a highervalue provides better colour quality.Philips heat management designHEAT PRODUCEDBY DRIVERHot air exCRI chartCRI 60CRI 70CRI 80Interchangeof temperaturethrough smartheat managementdesignenterCold airitHEAT PRODUCEDBY LEDGood CRISome LEDs may boast of a long lifespan butas time passes it may lose its brightness andeffectiveness. What is IC rating? The classification of various types of recessed luminaires suitable for different installation processes waspublished in the AS/NZS 60598.2.2:2016 Part 2:2 standards, commonly known as the “IC rating”.Whilst the classification is a minimum safety standard, the responsibility of the safety of the completeinstallation rests with the contractor to ensure all materials used are thermally compatible, and to adhereto luminaire manufacturer’s instructions. It is also important to note that the IC classification does not take into consideration the implication onproduct performance. Possible issues such as flickering, reduced lifetime, product shut down and restartat intervals, which could be caused by overheating.Philips products are designed to adhere to local safety standards whilst not compromising onperformance. With Philips, you can be sure that you are buying a quality, reliable and safe product!IC-4IC-4 Suitable for residential or commercial use Fitting can be covered with building insulation Can be used where air transfer is not permitted or not desiredbetween living space & roof spaceIC Suitable for residential or commercial use Fitting can be loosely covered with building insulation Can be used where some air transfer is permitted or desiredbetween living space & roof spaceCA 9090 Suitable for residential or commercial use Fitting cannot be covered with building insulation Insulation can be placed against the sides ofthe fittingDo not cover Suitable for residential or commercial use in AU.
