XK8 Range 1997UserInstructionsIntroductionElectrical Guide FormatThis Electrical Guide is made up of two major sections. The first section, at the front of the book, provides general information for and about the use of the book, and information and illustrations to aid in the understanding of the XK8 electrical /electronic systems, as well as the location and identification of components. The second section includes the Figures, which are the basis of the book. Each Figure is identified by a Figure Number (i.e.Fig. 01.1) and Title, and is accompanied by a page of data containing information specific to that Figure. It is recommended that the user read through the front section of the book to develop a familiarity with the layout of thebook and with the system of symbols and abbreviations used. The Table of Contents on the following pages should helpto guide the user.Standard AbbreviationsThe following abbreviations are used throughout this Electrical Guide:B Battery VoltageCANController Area NetworkCOUPE Coupe VehiclesCONV.Convertible VehiclesDIDirection IndicatorLHLeft-HandLHDLeft-Hand DriveNASNorth American SpecificationRHRight-HandRHDRight-Hand DriveROWRest of WorldSCPStandard Corporate Protocol NetworkVINVehicle Identification NumberRefer to the vehicle Service Manual for a glossary of standard terms and their abbreviations.Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN)VIN ranges are presented throughout the book in the following manner: VIN 123456 indicates “up to VIN 123456”; VIN 123456 indicates “from VIN 123456 on”.XK8 Electrical System ArchitectureThe XK8 system “architecture” is new to Jaguar vehicles and features vehicle multiplexing. Multiplexing allows for greatlysimplified wiring harnesses, while at the same time allowing flexibility in programming market variants. Two data networks are used in the system: a controller area network (CAN) for the engine, drive train and related systems, and a standard corporate protocol network (SCP) for the body systems. Any vehicle subsystem depicted on the figures with theCAN or SCP included uses data derived from the network, or transmits data via the network to achieve control. Messagesfor both networks are cataloged in the Appendix of this book. When appropriate, the user will be referred to the Appendixby a note on the Data page. In addition to the two networks, the XK8 uses a serial data bus (ISO) for diagnostics and forthe programming of certain control modules. The XK8 uses both power and logic grounds; however, it does not use a common logic ground stud connection as inprevious vehicles.DATE OF ISSUE:OCTOBER 19961
