Triestewas controlled by the Habsburg monarchy from 1382 until its collapsein 1918, and the Austrian influence remains visible in the city'sarchitecture. An important seaport from the 18 th century on, a variety ofdifferent cultures have left their mark on the city and Trieste continuesto attract visitors from all over the world.3

The square is lined by neoclassical andbaroque buildings housing municipal offices, cafés, barsand a hotel. MIRAMARE CASTLEwww.pixelguide.toTHE OUTSKIRTSPIXEL.GUIDE miniMiramare Castle was built for Austria's ArchdukeFerdinand Maximilian and his wife Charlotte of Belgiumbetween 1856 and 1860 and includes rooms with anautical theme, the Miramare Casteletto and extensiveparklands. SAN GIUSTO CATHEDRALwww.pixelguide.toTHE SIGHTSPIXEL.GUIDE miniTrieste's San Giusto Cathedral stands on the San GiustoHill in the centre of the city, alongside the castle of thesame name. The first church was built here in the 6 thcentury, but the existing cathedral dates back to the 9 thcentury. RISIERA DI SAN SABBAwww.pixelguide.toOFF THE BEATEN PATHPIXEL.GUIDE miniThe Risiera di San Sabba was originally built as a rice-husking facility in 1913. During World War II the buildingwas converted into a concentration camp, primarily forpolitical prisoners. After the war it became a refugeecentre and was declared a national monument in 1965. SAINT SPYRIDON CHURCHwww.pixelguide.toARCHITECTUREPIXEL.GUIDE miniThe spectacular Saint Spyridon Church is a SerbianOrthodox place of worship. Built in the Byzantine style ofEastern churches, Saint Spyridon's opened in 1868 andcan hold 1,600 people. The groundfloor hosts several food stalls and provides opportunitiesfor street photography, while the upper level offers a viewof the building. In Roman times the theatreprovided a view of the sea and had an estimated capacityof between 3000-6000 spectators. The theatre wasrediscovered in 1814 and finally uncovered in 1938. It is nowconsidered one of the most impressive Jewish houses ofworship in Europe and is a symbol of Trieste's longJewish history. ABOUT THE IXEL.GUIDE miniDylan Whiting is a Vienna-based video producer, journalist and photographer from NewZealand. After completing his film studies at the University of Reading, Dylan worked intelevision in the United Kingdom and Germany before returning to Vienna, Austria. Theenthusiastic musician and traveller enjoys combining his passions and has made aninternational name for himself as a music photographer. His first exhibition, "new zealandnorth - abandoned/ beauty", was held in 2016.Cliff Kapatais is a professional photographer, agency head and lecturer from Vienna. Aftermany years working in IT, his passion for travel, cooking and people led to a career inphotography. His favourite photography fields include food and documentary, as well as portraitand beauty.
