Page 2What is the Pyramid of Success?John Wooden is famous in part for his historic success as a head basketballcoach at UCLA. Coach Wooden received the Medal of Freedom Award because ofhis work teaching leadership and character, which he summarized in his Pyramid ofSuccess. The Pyramid of Success is a powerful teaching tool with 15 fundamentalpersonal qualities; building blocks that he viewed as essential: Hard Work,Enthusiasm, Friendship, Loyalty, Cooperation, Self-Control, Alertness, Action,Determination, Fitness, Skill, Team Spirit, Poise, Confidence and Personal Best.Coach Wooden taught that the highest standard of success is measured by theEFFORT you put forth to bring out your full potential and personal best. Each month of this school year, our All Star students will be introduced toblocks in the Pyramid by the journey of Inch and Miles through the student agenda. While we will be introducing these important concepts to your son or daughter, theessential parent role is to guide your child and being a role model for these traits. In September, our building blocks were Hard Work and Enthusiasm. Workinghard is about giving something your all instead of just going through the motions.Working hard to reach your goals also requires planning the steps you will need totake to get there. Coach Wooden said that Enthusiasm means you have pep, energy, and the greatest interest in what you are doing. Coach said, “Simply put, I mean youmust love that which you do.” To have enthusiasm, combine your smile along withwork you’ll find worthwhile. The following students were selected by staff membersfor showing Hard Work or Enthusiasm!Kindergarten:Hard Work – Abbie Sands, River Hines, Mateo Thillet, Joel JustinEnthusiasm – Riley Bahnweg, Yao Wang, Ava Lawson, Allie ReedFirst Grade:Hard Work- Nicole Josey, Carolyn Jeon, Alyssa Voit, Nikhil PeregoEnthusiasm – Zahra Qureshi, Elle Collier, Clay Patton, Eleanor ZengSecond Grade:Hard Work – Kayman Soltani, Tyler Frintner, Morgan Childers,Sophia Broz, Erik HinsonEnthusiasm – Grace Grim, Melanie Baker, Raegan Ledford,Taylor Uszacki, Carly RainwaterThird Grade:Hard Work - Yvette Krueger, Cody Hund, Bryan Roman, Julianne FickerEnthusiasm – Morgan Ketzner, Andy Hurd, Macy AikiaFourth Grade:Hard Work – Kara Cushman, Marley Bailey, Evan ZottlEnthusiasm – Jackson Ellis, Jackson Lewer, Eli Hofmeister

Friendship is a two-way street. Throughout our lives, wemake new friends. And if we’re lucky (and good friends to others), we keep ourold friends, too! While friendship seems like such a simple concept, it is quitecomplex—especially when it comes to the ever-changing relationships during theschool years. Friendship is another important block in the Pyramid of Success ,and is a trait your child will always be developing. Whether your child’s friendsare in the neighborhood, classroom, or on the field, they will help him or her growand learn. This month, we will study friendship and take a good look at thequalities we look for in a good friend. We’ll be discussing the importance ofshowing respect and how we can be a good friend to others.“To have a friend you must be a friend. And friends are very important.”- Coach John WoodenMRES is a PEANUT FREEschool!
