Effective Self-HypnosisForeword by Roger MooreIdon’t remember when I first started using selfhypnosis, but I was a young boy. I was about sixor seven years old when my back was injured, andI began to feel there was something different aboutmy back. A year or two later I was diagnosed withscoliosis, and in rural Minnesota, there was notreatment for that. I was told I just had to live withit. In my stoic, German-American farming family, there was no time or tolerance for pain. So toescape the pain, I created fantasy realities where Iwas free of it.I didn’t know that what I was doing had a name orthat it was something that other people used, untilI read my first hypnosis book when I was in highschool. That book provided structure on how tohypnotize other people, but it didn’t mention selfhypnosis. It did, however, give me some tips onhow I could dial back my level of pain.My fascination with hypnosis led me to read everybook on it I could find and ultimately to become avii

Dr. Richard K. Nongardcertified hypnotherapist. I confirmed that I couldbe mindful in the moment, living in my preferredreality, sending my pain off to another reality.Later on, thanks to self-hypnosis, I was also able tolose 120 pounds and keep it off, which certainlyhelped ease my back pain. In addition, I was able tocomplete five marathons, I’ve logged more than30,000 miles on my bike, and I’m still cycling. As the scoliosis continues to twist my spine so thatthe trunk of my body shrinks, I live with pain. It isa constant, but because of self-hypnosis, pain doesnot control me. To this day I’ve never needed painmedication stronger than Novocain in a dentaloffice or an occasional ibuprofen at home.Because of my personal experiences, I believe it’sessential to teach all my clients the Light SwitchSelf-hypnosis technique. And over the past twentythree years in private practice, I’ve heard countlessstories of changed lives.I remember the first time Dr. Richard Nongardcalled me. I felt an immediate connection andinvited him to attend a March 2011 pain class I wasteaching in Seattle. We quickly became friends andcolleagues, and we have taught several classesviii

Effective Self-Hypnosistogether over the years. When I seek personal andprofessional advice, he is one of the few people Iturn to.I have met hypnotherapists from around the world.Few people have the depth of knowledge andunderstanding of hypnosis that Dr. Nongard has,and even fewer can so concisely condense complexideas into simple, easy to understand and usetechniques. He demonstrates that gift in this clearlywritten book.Richard Nongard gets it, that self-hypnosis is justthe well-directed use of a common ability we allhave. And as he wrote, “Self-hypnosis is so easy, evena child can learn how to do it.”When I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. Dr.Nongard captivated me with his explanation oftrance and his demystification of hypnosis. Heprovides the reader with seven powerful selfhypnosis methods, that could well change andtransform your life. The Seven Most Effective Methods of Self-Hypnosis isfor hypnosis novices as well as for seasonedprofessionals. I will certainly be recommendingix

Effective Self-HypnosisChapter One:So Simple a Child Can Do It!Astudy was done with children who sufferedfrom Juvenile Classic Migraine Disorder thatlooked at the effectiveness of self-hypnosis vs. theeffectiveness of medication. Children with adiagnosis but no previous treatment were split intothree groups. One group learned self-hypnosis, onegroup only got medication (in this casepropranolol), and a placebo group got nothing. Theresults were astonishing! The self-hypnosis grouphad a decrease of headache frequency that was 62%more effective than either the placebo group or thegroup who got medication. The most amazing thing though? This was a groupof 6 to 12-year-old children. The happy kids withless pain were not a group of children who werehypnotized by a doctor or a powerful stagehypnotist; rather, it was a group of children whowere taught how to do self-hypnosis.The lesson here: Self-hypnosis is so easy, even achild can learn how to do it.1

Dr. Richard K. NongardA recent study in the journal Obesity, a researchjournal, showed that those who were taught selfhypnosis lost more weight, felt fuller, and reducedcaloric intake. A 2018 study showed women withmultiple sclerosis who were taught self-hypnosiscould decrease pain intensity and could modifytheir quality of pain.A simple search of the peer reviewed literature onself-hypnosis shows that both kids, teens andadults find significant benefits from self-hypnosis.It also shows that self-hypnosis can help withdistressing medical diagnosis, harmful habitreductions, and help people manage difficultemotions. Self-hypnosis works. There are literallythousands of studies showing that hypnosis is aneffective first-line intervention for many issues thatpeople face. The good news is that it not only works for peoplein academic studies, but it can work for you. Whatwould you like to change? Would you like to stopsmoking, stop overeating and start feeling yourbest? Self-hypnosis can help you. Would you like tomove from a state of anxiety and fear, to calm andconfidence? What would it mean to you if thesymptoms of your medical conditions, or the side2

Effective Self-Hypnosiseffects of medications you must take, could bemanaged through a simple process of self-hypnosis?In my own life, I have used self-hypnosis with greatsuccess. It helped me overcome a paralyzing fear offlying. Since that time, I have been all over theworld, to over 20 countries, and have createdmemories and experiences that have enriched mylife. I quit smoking with self-hypnosis, and I havecontrolled anxiety and created calm where thereused to be stress by practicing self-hypnosis. A fewyears ago, I used self-hypnosis to recover fasterfrom surgery, and to control chronic pain caused bya joint injury. Many of the methods in this book aremethods I have used myself. The results of selfhypnosis in my life have been amazing, and I thinkyou will discover they are amazing as well. Can you imagine what your world would become ifyou learned how to create confidence in anysituation, or could stop anxiety in its tracks? Whatif you could access higher learning resource states,or could improve your memory and retention ofthings that you learned? What would happen if youreached your goals, both personal and professional, and were able to do it by hypnotizing yourself?3

Dr. Richard K. NongardWhat about improving your sex life? Overcomingadversity, or attracting success at every level?Famous people who have used hypnosisMatt Damon exclaimed, that hypnosis was “hegreatest decision I ever made in my life” andpronounced to host Jay Leno on the Tonight Showthat he had used it to quit smoking. Ever since thatnight, people have asked me if other famous peoplehave used hypnosis to live a better life. The answeris, yes! Stars have used hypnosis for not onlyhelping them to q
