West Shores Community NewsVolume 6, Issue 8Covering from Desert Shoresto Salton City & Borrego SpringsAugust, 2018Salton Sea Visitors (by Paddie Connelly)We all have an inkling about the wanted (and sometimes unwanted) visitors that flock to our sea’s WestShores: off-roaders, curiosity seekers, scientists, family members, passers-by and boatmen bugs. We observefolks in our midst at one of the shops or eating establishments, some of them we’ve seen before and some . . .well, chance encounters. One of the places that is graced with all sorts of visitors is Ray and Carol’s Motel, down by Johnson’sLanding. Without invading anyone’s privacy, I asked proprietors Gary and Roxie Catherman, to tell me aboutsome of the people they’ve put up. Here’s what I can share.A few of the big draws are bird-watching, hiking, off-roading and during certain seasons, operators ofparasails and other flying machines. Of course, videographers love the Sea and our communities have beenfeatured in numerous music vids, documentaries and movies; in fact, the Salton Sea has a feature role inGrand Theft Auto 5. The Sea has been featured in Audubon Magazine as well as in various scientific studies.Student filmmakers from California-based film schools love the area because, if needed, the cost of obtainingpermits for filming is minimal compared to those in their home neighborhoods and the subject matter isfascinating. And, until recently, we have been a haven for anglers. Many foreign guests find their ways to our shores because they study the phenomena of the Sea in gradeschool. Recently, we’ve hosted visitors from the following countries: Finland, Denmark, Poland, Austria,Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Great Britain, Spain, Columbia, Canada and Japan. Additionally, photographersof international note often stay here: check out Eric Lampe, Steven Thrasher and Zach Powell – then look attheir on-line galleries for shots of the sea you will certainly recognize.Of course, many permanent residents have families that want to visit but cannot accommodate a large influx ofpeople. Enter Ray and Carol’s. In fact, one of my friends recently put up his visiting cousins and, from allreports, the experience was really first class. That’s good.In the end, though, it’s up to all of us to welcome visitors, to care for our properties and to do whatever wepossibly can to restore our Sea. Our voices count in so many ways – how about raising them together?Zumba Comes to the West Shores (by Paddie Connelly)Salton Sea Visitors (by Paddie Connelly)ZUMBA classes are now on-going: Next class: Tuesday, July 27 at 6PM, West Shores Senior Center onS22/Anza-Borrego/SaltonSeaway.Successiveclasses withcertifiedvisitorsZUMBAinstructor, available. 2.00 perWe all have an inkling aboutthe wanted(and sometimesunwanted)thatflock to oursea’s setA/Ccosts.ForcompleteinfoandfuturedatesShores: off-roaders, curiosity seekers, scientists, family members, passers-by and boatmen bugs. VFW Post 3251 Celebrate 4th of July (by Celeste Misch)July 4,1776 - THIRTEEN COLONIES DECLARED “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” AND FREE FROMBRITTISH RULE.The most important date in the history of the United States of America, “Independence Day” was most appropriatelycelebrated at the Salton Sea’s VFW, Post 3251. This July 4, 2018 marks two hundred forty-two years since America’sMilitary was established. Our military men and women continue to fight for our freedom and the freedom of otherNations to this day. America’s brave, both young and old have carried the torch of freedom in their hearts and soulsthroughout time and they are the ones we owe this day of celebration to.The American War of Independence lasted from 1775 to 1781. After one year of war with the British, the SecondContinental Congress decided it was time for the Colonies to declare their independence from British rule and fight fortheir freedom. Five leaders were appointed in June,1776 to write the Declaration of Independence: John Adams, BenFranklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. One of the most famous statements in the history of the United States of America is in the Declaration ofIndependence.“We hold these truths to be Self Evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creatorwith certain Unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”.The Second Continental Congress adopted the final version of the Declaration of Independents on July 4, 1776,declaring that all thirteen colonies were now the United States of America and a free nation separate from England, although the war didn’t end until 1781.Three United States military branches were born during this revolution under the Second Continental Congress:1. THE CONTENENTAL ARMY: The oldest and largest branch of military was established on June 14, 1775and became the official Army of the United States of America on Sept. 29, 1789.2. THE CONTINENTAL NAVY: Established on Oct. 13, 1775, dis-banned in 1783 and reestablished as theUnited States Navy in 1794.3. THE CONTINENTAL MARINES: Established on Nov. 10, 1775 as part of the Continental Army. Dis-bannedin 1783 and reestablished July 11, 1798 as the United States Marine Corp. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3251’s Independents Day celebration was a joyous event. It was attended byVeterans, who’s service spanned several generations. There to celebrate and give a “thank You for your service” werea great number of the Salton Sea residents and the Salton Sea fire Department. The room that was thought wouldaccommodate everyone, over flowed into a second room. SCSD Board Votes for Community Clubhouse (by Paddie Connelly)At Wednesday’s meeting, the Salton Community Services District Board of Directors voted to proceed witha “community clubhouse” at the Salton City Park; the cost is US 63,000 and has been budgeted. Plans callfor a permanent structure, approximately 40’ x 60’ x 14’ – to be used by all citizens on a first-come, firstserve basis. It is believed that the structure will be finished by Hallowe’en – that is, if the crik don’t rise.Rental fees and other regulations are available at the district office, as is the fee schedule for use of districtequipment and machinery. NOTE: The District office is now open four days a week from 7AM to 5PM,Monday through Thursday. They are closed on Friday.Madeleine and the Red Truck (by Paddie Connelly)There is one fewer little red truck plying the S86 between Desert Shores and Salton City. Sad but true, oneof our all-time favorite folks has gone on. While I am quite certain, personally, that we will always begraced with her indomitable presence in one form or another, I am equally certain that I will miss witnessingher exercising her intense, infectious belief in what she thought was right – that, along with her sense of theinalienable right she had as a US citizen to speak her mind. And, speak it she did – sometimes in a nononsense, in-your-face “You’d better believe it, Buddy” manner. I know I join a long list of friends andacquaintances who send heartfelt wishes to family and friends, folks who know first-hand that there is achink in the West Shores armor these days. Oh, and that thunder the other day . . . I have it on pretty goodauthority that Madeleine has not spoken her last. Blessings, my friend, and bon voyage.Bus Services Available on the West ShoresThere is bus transportation on the West Shores. This benefit that is provided to us by ImperialCounty, though somewhat limited at this time, isstill a great resource. Have You Ever Seen Dust Bunny with Dreds (by Paddie Connelly)Me, neither but before you get your knickers all in a twist regarding ethnically slanted remarks, let me tellyou that two of my own grandkids currently sport those tightly wound, long curly locks, so . . . ShirleyTemple eat your heart out.Jennifer, DB #317, has decided that she needs to start a low-charge hair salon for her friends and neighbors.Well, while I don’t object to private enterprise, I do object to starting an unlicensed business under my tablewith no thought of remuneration to me. I mean, free enterprise and certain capitalistic tenets have helpedpreserve the Republic for over two hundred years, right? Altruism? What?It seems that the humidity we’re experiencing is not conducive to trending bunnylocks; in fact, most of thegirly bunnies refuse to be seen at all. The guys just don’t seem to care – they’ll go along with the gals on thisone. I also think the younger ladies are thinking about getting back to school and they want to look theirbest. Understood, but not necessarily at my cost. So, yes, there is an element of unrest down at the DustBunny Confederation. Something must be done. After meditating, I have a question and that question is: at what point does lookin’ groovy trump paying yourdues? Is it okay for our kids to get whatever they want, whenever they want it, without thought to personalor material cost, without consideration for the larger picture, without intuitive imagining of landscapes orfuturescapes or their effect on imminent generations? And, perhaps more to the point, how do we imbueour offspring with the curiosity and gumption to first develop (formulate) the questions and then ask them ofthe people from whom they really need a viable answer (NOT necessarily their classmates or friends)? How do we help our kids grow up to be functioning, self-sufficient adults – folks who don’t get their news inbite-sized, pre-digested chunks? Or, for that matter from a late-night talk show host? Folks who know howto look and to see. Folks who can think and do. I asked Jennifer and her buds about this and received themost infuriating answer of all, “I don’t know ”Well, I DO know. When I was a kid (yes, another one of these tales) if I asked for something, my parentssaid, “How are you going to get it?” and I had to devise the ways and means to move forward. So, here Iam, still finding ways to get it. I am not the worse for it, either. And,In the meantime, I conceded to putting a humidifier under the table for a few moments each day (it’s goodfor the piano’s sounding board, too – but that’s another story). Jennifer DB and her cohorts have agreed toscrap the plan for the hair salon – their straightened locks look gorgeous -- and they’ve even said they’d tidytheir rooms. Oh my . . .Blessings. Ciao!West Shores Community News August 2018Page 12
