These are the skills that underpinsuccess in the classroom and the worldof work such as Teamwork, ProblemSolving, Speaking and Listening.Students need to be able to recognisetheir skillset and talk about it confidentlytoo. They will probably be using themalready in your lessons, but this can be aconfusing space, with lots of overlappingterminology.The Skills Builder Universal Frameworkhas been developed by The Careers& Enterprise Company, Skills BuilderPartnership, Gatsby Foundation andothers to address this problem.The Framework breaks down eightessential skills into 16 teachable steps. Itoutlines a roadmap for progress, givingeducators and employers a commonlanguage for talking about the skills thatare essential for employment. Therefore,the Department for Education has puttogether a couple of simple and handyguides to inform young people and theirparents about the options available tothem. Use the below guidance to help you.Key QuestionsGuidanceWhat are you arelooking to achieve?What are the planned outcome(s)? i.e.Try and be as clearand purposefulas possible whenframing an ‘ask’ ofemployers For students and parents/carers to understand the relevance of yoursubject to careers. To encourage students to consider pursuing your subject to GCSE level. For students to have an insight into key labour market information.For emotional reasons: Personal connection, e.g. they have family at the school or a relativeworks at the school or college.What benefitswould there be tothe employer forsupporting? History, e.g. they are an alumni of the school or college.
