Multilevel Expansion Activities include games, tasks, brainstorming, discussion, movement, drawing, miming, and role playing—all designed to reinforce and enrich instruction in a waythat is stimulating, creative, and fun! Activity levels are indicated through a three-star system:One-star activities are designed forbelow-level students. These activitiestypically present students with a singletask, such as listening for particularvocabulary words or grammar, repeatingwords or phrases, or pantomimingactions. These activities are highlystructured with very defined answers.Often the direction of input is from theteacher, rather than the student.Two-star activities are for at-levelstudents. These activities usually presentdual tasks—such as categorizing whiletaking dictation, listening to a partialsentence and completing it, or speakingand finding a student with a matchingline. These are moderately structuredactivities, with some open answers androom for interpretation. They can beteacher-directed or student-directed,so these activities require that studentshave some control of language and someindependence.Three-star activities are forabove-level students. These activitiesoften include several steps and multiplelanguage tasks, such as role plays, discussions, debates, and creative writingbased on lesson themes. These activitiesare highly unstructured, with muchroom for student input, interpretation, and control. Since most input comesfrom students, these activities requiremastery of vocabulary and studentindependence.1. True or False? a. Have students open their books to text page 3.c. Have each group write sentences based onthe cards.b. Make statements about the characters ontext page 3, and have students tell you Trueor False. If the statement is false, havestudents correct it. xii-xxiii SBS Plus TG1 FM.qxd11/19/073:05 PMPage xivStudent Book OverviewUNIT OPENING PAGESThe opening page of each unit provides alisting of the grammatical structures and topicsthat are treated in the unit. A VocabularyPreview depicts some of the key vocabularywords that students will encounter within theunit. Some teachers may wish to present andpractice these words before beginning the unit.Other teachers may prefer to wait until thewords occur in the particular lesson in whichthey are introduced.GUIDED CONVERSATION LESSONSThe guided conversation is the core learningdevice that integrates grammar, vocabulary, andtopics and serves as the springboard for the allskills language practice and life-skills practicethat follows.Grammatical ParadigmsA new grammatical structure appears first inthe form of a grammatical paradigm, or“grammar box”—a simple schema of thestructure. (Grammar boxes are in a light bluetint.) These paradigms are meant to be areference point for students as they proceedthrough a lesson’s conversational activities. While these paradigms highlight the structuresbeing taught, they are not intended to be goalsin themselves. Students are not expected tomemorize or parrot back these rules. Rather,we want students to take part in conversationsthat show they can use these rules correctly.Model Guided ConversationsModel conversations serve as the vehicles forintroducing new grammatical structures andcommunicative uses of English. Because themodel becomes the basis for all the exercisesthat follow, it is essential that students be givensufficient practice with it before proceedingwith the lesson.Side by Side ExercisesIn the numbered exercises that follow themodel, students pair up and work “side byside,” placing new content into the givenconversational framework. These exercisesxivINTRODUCTIONform the core learning activity of eachconversation lesson.LANGUAGE EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIESThe initial lessons in each unit develop students’general language proficiency through aresearch-based grammatical sequence, acommunicative approach, and all-skillslanguage-lea
