PrefaceThis manual is intended to help make your worldhistory survey course as successful as possible. Itoffers chapter-by-chapter suggestions, resources, andstrategies for teaching with Ways of the World: ABrief Global History and Ways of the World: A BriefGlobal History with Sources. Because everyinstructor teaches history differently, the resources inthis manual can be used in a variety of ways, givingyou many options for designing and redesigning acourse to focus on specific topics or areas of interest.CHAPTER FEATURESEach chapter of this manual outlines and elaborateson the content from the textbook and introducesadditional resources that can be used to supplementlectures and create new assignments.Chapter Learning Objectives open each chapter ofthe manual. Instructors can use these objectives toorganize and refine the delivery of material, to craftexams, and to identify major issues and events thatstudents should comprehend.The Annotated Chapter Outline fully reviewschapter coverage for easy reference. This quicksurvey of the narrative, which is convenientlyorganized to cover each major chapter section, willallow instructors to focus on the parts of the textmost relevant to their course and help write lectures.The Chapter Questions section provides modelanswers for every review and feature question in thetextbook. These are meant to assist an instructor orteaching assistant in leading discussions or injudging students’ responses. Theyoffer points of departure for topical areas ofimportance in a survey class.Things to Do in the Classroom, which offerssuggested activities for engaging students, such asdebates and simulations based on important topics inthe text, is divided into four subsections. DiscussionTopics is designed to challenge students to explore,through classroom interaction, key themes from newperspectives by emphasizing contextualization,comparison, and ways to address misconceptions ordifficult topics. Classroom Activities includes threeactivities designed to engage students in active learningin the classroom. Class Discussion for the Documentsand Visual Sources Features is designed to sparkclass discussion based on the Document and VisualSource features presented at the end of each chapter inWays of the World: A Brief Global History withSources. Similarly, the Classroom Activities for theDocuments and Visual Source Features sectioncontains specific group activities designed around theDocument and Visual Source features.The What’s the Significance section provides aneasy reference for definitions to all terms found inthe “What’s the Significance?” section at the end ofeach textbook chapter. Pronunciation keys areincluded for challenging terms.The annotated Further Reading list offers an up-todate selection of books and Web sites chosenspecifically to provide instructors with shortscholarly introductions to topics covered in eachchapter of the textbook and in the lecture strategies.The annotated Film list suggests easily accessibleiii
