When I share that term I wonder what comes to your mind? Allowme to speculate. I would imagine it reminds you that our church has been in a season ofintense analysis and study looking to answer the question of how we are doing. TheFocus Team had a lot of meetings and they worked very hard at leading this process. And, actually, the process is still going on. I, for one, consider that a good thing becausewe must prepare for the future and we must strive to be a church alert to what God wouldlead us to do in these challenging days. Consequently, in the midst of all this seriousstrategizing, I have felt led to invite Richard Owen Roberts to preach at First Baptist for atime of spiritual renewal. The dates are: Sunday, June 4 through Wednesday, June 7.I personally have enjoyed the intense study we have been doing concerning the directionand health of our church. I love this church and I love the study of church life in general. However, the danger in all this intense scrutiny is that we can become preoccupied withorganizational structure, statistics, goals, and human expertise. Admittedly, all thosethings are necessary to consider and utilize. But in the midst of all the analysis there mustbe the acknowledgement that the Spirit and the Word are what constitute the power toaccomplish all that God wants to accomplish among us.So, I hope you will join me in personally preparing for a spiritual work to beaccomplished under the ministry of Bro. Roberts. For most he is no stranger. For those towhom he is, I will do my best to introduce him. I am convinced this will prove to be atime of spiritual renewal for all of us. See you Sunday.Congratulations, Graduates!2017 High School GraduatesIn This IssueShannon Brown Prayer & Faith by E.M.Bounds Prayer Gathering Annie ArmstrongOffering Update Note of Appreciation New Babies! Prayer and Faith by E.M. BoundsYet faith is called upon, and that right often to wait in patiencebefore God, and is prepared for God’s seeming delays in answeringprayer. Faith does not grow disheartened because prayer is notimmediately honored; it takes God at his Word, and lets him takewhat time he chooses in fulfilling his purposes, and in carrying onhis work. There is bound to be much delay and long days ofwaiting for true faith, but faith accepts the condition—knows therewill be delays in answering prayer, and regards such delays astimes of testing, in which, it is privileged to show its mettle, and thestern stuff of which it is made. The case of Lazarus was an instance of where there was delay, where the faith of two good women was sorely tried: Lazarus wascritically ill, and his sisters sent for Jesus. But, without any knownreason, our Lord delayed his going to the relief of his sick friend. The plea was urgent and touching—“Lord, behold, he whom thoulovest is sick”—but the master is not moved by it, and the women’searnest request seemed to fall on deaf ears. What a trial to faith!Furthermore: our Lord’s tardiness appeared to bring about hopelessdisaster. While Jesus tarried, Lazarus died. But the delay of Jesus was exercised in the interests of a greatergood. Finally, he makes his way to the home in Bethany. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, “Lazarus isdead. And I am glad for your sakes, that I was notthere, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless letus go unto him.”Fear not, O tempted and tried believer, Jesus will come, ifpatience is exercised, and faith holds fast. His delay will serve tomake his coming the more richly blessed. Pray on. Wait on. Youcannot fail. If Christ delay, wait for him. In his own good time, hewill come, and will not tarry.Delay is often the test and the strength of faith. How muchpatience is required when these times of testing come! Yet faithgathers strength by waiting and praying. Patience has its perfectwork in the school of delay. In some instances, delay is of the veryessence of the prayer. God has to do many things, antecedent togiving the final answer—things which are essential to the lastinggood of him who is requesting favor at his hands.Jacob prayed, with point and ardor, to be delivered from Esau. But before that prayer could be answered, there was much to bedone with, and for Jacob. He must be changed, as well as Esau.Jacob had to be made into a new man, before Esau could be. Jacobhad to be converted to God, before Esau could be converted toJacob. The Complete Works of E.M.
